Built from Experience.
Driven by Purpose.
TEC Automation is a proudly Northern Territory and Aboriginal-owned and operated company.
TEC Automation was founded in 2019 to fill a clear gap in the Northern Territory - a need for specialist industrial electrical and automation services that were local, capable and here for the long term.
When you work with TEC, you’re choosing a partner that delivers on-site, supports procurement requirements and invests back into the communities we live and work in.
Building a future for our families,
our team and our community.
TEC wasn’t built just because there was work to be done.
It was built to do things differently.
Ryan Smith and Soraya Smith saw a gap in the Territory - not just in capability, but in opportunity.
Too often, high-level electrical and automation work was delivered in the NT without building local skills or creating long-term pathways for people on the ground.
We set out to build a business that:
Builds local Aboriginal capability in the services we provide
Creates a future for our families and the families of our team
Delivers quality work that holds up over time
Gives our team exposure to systems and projects they wouldn’t normally access
Creates real training and development opportunities
Brings people along on the journey - not just uses them for it
TEC Automation was built to make a positive change - not just complete projects.
This is about building something that lasts.
For our families. For our team. For our community.
From Experience
to Execution
In 2019, co-directors Ryan and Soraya Smith recognised a gap in the Northern Territory - not just for electrical services, but for specialist automation capability delivered locally.
Ryan brought deep electrical engineering experience from working across some of the NT’s most demanding environments, including Defence bases, power stations and critical infrastructure.
Soraya brought extensive experience in policy and project management within the Northern Territory Government, shaping how the business approaches structure, compliance and long-term partnerships.
Together, they built TEC Automation to solve complex electrical problems - and to build something that didn’t just deliver work, but created opportunity.
With a clear gap in local Aboriginal capability in the level of electrical and automation work typically delivered in industries like oil and gas and major infrastructure projects.
TEC Automation was built to help close that gap.
We are:
Creating pathways into high-level electrical and automation work
Giving people exposure to systems and environments they wouldn’t normally access
Investing in training, development and long-term careers
Building capability locally, not relying on fly-in, fly-out solutions
The goal isn’t just to complete projects - it’s to build a workforce that can deliver this level of work in the Territory, for the long term.
Built on Trust, Capability
& Delivery
Growth through delivery
TEC Automation has grown by delivering the work, consistently.
No shortcuts. No overpromising. Just consistent delivery across projects, maintenance and emergency response.
Maintenance that prevents repeat failures
Projects delivered in live operational environments
Emergency response when systems go down
Each job built trust. Each project reinforced the same reputation: a team that shows up and delivers when it matters.
Built for the territory
Operating in the Northern Territory shapes how we work.
Remote locations, extreme weather and critical infrastructure mean systems need to be built and maintained differently.
That experience has become a core part of TEC Automation’s capability; understanding not just how systems should work, but how they actually perform in real conditions.
From specialist
to full capability
What started as a specialist automation business has grown into a complete industrial electrical and automation provider.
Today, TEC Automation supports:
Preventative maintenance and optimisation
Control systems and automation projects
Switchboard manufacturing and upgrades
Hazardous area electrical work
Emergency fault response
Control work and fault-finding
The scope has grown - but the focus, trust and quality hasn’t.
looking ahead
TEC Automation is built for the long term.
Our focus is on continuing to grow capability, strengthen partnerships and deliver specialist industrial electrical and automation services across the Territory for decades to come.
This is not a short-term operation.
It’s a business built to support the future of infrastructure, industry and communities across the Northern Territory.
Our approach
on every job
-
Safety is non-negotiable. No shortcuts, no compromises. Our safety culture is embedded in how we plan, deliver, and review every job - from safe work method statements and toolbox talks through to site audits and post-work reviews.
All staff hold current safety training, and subcontractors must meet our standards before working on any TEC site.
-
Every job, whether a complex SCADA integration or a maintenance callout, is completed to the highest standard. Our team brings specialist technical knowledge to every project, backed by proper documentation, compliance records, and follow-up where needed.
We solve the cause of the issue, not just the symptom - so the problem doesn’t come back.
-
We’re committed to minimising environmental impact across all our operations. We comply with relevant environmental legislation, manage waste appropriately, and consider environmental risks as part of our project planning on every site.
-
Technical expertise is only maintained through continuous learning. We invest in ongoing training and upskilling across our team - keeping pace with evolving control platforms, compliance requirements, and industry best practice.
-
We actively support Territory-based training pathways and local employment as part of our commitment to building sustainable capability across the NT.
