Why buy your switchboard from a local NT manufacturer?

We get this question a lot, usually from someone comparing quotes: “Why not just get the switchboard built in Brisbane or Perth and freighted up? It’d probably be cheaper.”

It’s a fair question. Here’s the honest answer.

A switchboard built for Australia in general isn’t the same as one built for the Territory

Heat, humidity, dust, a wet season that can cut off road access for weeks, and freight distances that would be unthinkable down south, all of that shortens the life of a panel that wasn’t specified with the Territory in mind.

We build to AS/NZS 61439, the Australian Standard for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, as the baseline. Then we add what actually matters up here: stainless steel where moisture and corrosion are a factor, full thermal insulation, ventilation, generator inlets, and remote monitoring for sites that can’t be visited every week.

Proven on Territory projects, not just capable on paper

After Daly River flooded again in March 2026, with water reaching rooftop height in parts of the community, Power & Water came to us to build the switchboard for the rebuilt sewage pump station. That’s a $90,000 fully automated Form 2 modular switchboard, built in our Darwin factory to run for 10 to 20 years with no manual controls needed, monitored and managed remotely because the nearest technician isn’t always close by.

We’ve also built the four switchboards behind the LIA heritage buildings job at RAAF Darwin, where a Defence contractor called us in after their existing crew, a multinational contractor, wasn’t delivering. We designed, built and commissioned those switchboards and programmed the PLCs in five days, in front of Defence consultants. That job grew into 40 heritage buildings, all fitted with automatic climate control for mould prevention and energy saving. Since then we’ve built a dozen custom pump control panels for Tindal RAAF Base in Katherine, and the switchboards running Territory Generation’s critical compressors in Tennant Creek.

What building local actually gets you

Faster response when something needs attention. We’re based in Darwin with a permanent Katherine presence, so if a panel we built needs a fault diagnosed, you’re not waiting on an interstate contractor to fly someone in.

One accountable team, start to finish. Design, manufacture, assembly and Factory Acceptance Testing all happen under one roof at our factory in Pinelands. Nothing gets farmed out, so there’s no gap between the people who designed it and the people who stand behind it years later.

Problems caught in our factory, not on your site. Every switchboard goes through Factory Acceptance Testing with the client before it’s shipped, every nut and bolt checked, wiring and numbering confirmed, documentation supplied. Finding an issue on a bench in Pinelands costs a fraction of finding it on a remote site hundreds of kilometres away.

The real cost of getting it wrong

Switchboards are critical infrastructure. When they fail, operations stop. If it was built to a generic spec by a supplier who’s never had to freight a part to a remote pump station in the middle of the wet, the cost of that failure is a lot higher than the cost of getting it built properly, locally, the first time.

We’re a Northern Territory and Aboriginal-owned business, building and maintaining switchboards across Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and remote NT locations since 2019. If you’ve got a switchboard project coming up, get in touch and we’ll talk you through what’s involved.
